Design Ideas

Scale and texture are important to a pleasing plant combination. Notice how none of these plants overwhelm the other. The leaf shapes of the plants on the left match the center of the far right Hosta. The Juniper and Japanese Maple have similar texture. The Liriope’s graceful leaves finish the composition.

Do It Yourself

Shrubs left in their natural shape or just lightly pruned are a lot easier to care for than trying to keep all your shrubs pruned into squares or balls.

Stretch your Dollars

Bring some nursery pots with a little soil in them on garden tours. You will be surprised how many gardeners will give you a cutting if you ask.

Plant List

Clockwise from left: “Rainbow” Leucothoe, “Gold Lace” Juniper, “Foster” Holly, “Crimson Queen” Japanese Maple, “Thunderbolt” Hosta, “Great Expectations” Hosta, and “Big Blue” Liriope.

Master Gardener

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
